UAV integration

Thermal-imaging drone

A 3D-printed FPV drone with RGB and thermal cameras, switched through a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W.

Problem & constraints

I wanted to switch between a normal camera view and thermal imaging on a small drone.

The cameras, computer, wiring, and propulsion had to fit on a small airframe without adding unnecessary weight or blocking access for repairs.

Design & approach

I printed and assembled the airframe, then integrated the RGB and thermal cameras with a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W for feed switching. I used PLA for the frame and lightweight PLA for the propeller ducts.

The frame and ducts used different materials to suit their weight and structural needs.

Results

I assembled and flight-tested the drone with the camera system integrated.
