Robotics + mechanical design
Lunar rolling robot
A spherical robot built for the NASA HUNCH Design Challenge, driven by an internal motor and steered by shifting weight.
- Tools
- CAD · DC motor · Servo actuation · Prototyping

Problem & constraints
The challenge called for a compact robot that could be deployed onto loose terrain, move around, and support imaging.
The design requirements included a six-foot drop into sand. The drive, steering mechanism, and imaging hardware had to fit inside a protective spherical shell.
Design & approach
Our team used an internal DC motor to roll the sphere and a servo to shift weight for steering.
The spherical shell enclosed the drive mechanism. Shifting internal weight provided a way to steer without adding external steering wheels.

Results
We built a prototype and documented it with CAD views, photos, and a rolling demonstration.
